Check your phone’s alarm: odds are the snooze offers you exactly 9 minutes. Not a round 10, not a quick 5. Nine. The number feels arbitrary, and in a sense it is: it was chosen by gear wheels, not by doctors. The story goes back seventy years, to the first alarm clocks that dared let you sleep a little longer, and it says a lot about how technical accidents become traditions.
A compromise carved in brass
In the 1950s, American clockmakers raced to add a seductive feature to their bestselling alarm clocks: a bar you could slap to buy a few more minutes. General Electric-Telechron’s Snooz-Alarm led the way, and the engineering problem was real. The snooze mechanism had to piggyback on the existing clockwork, meshing with gears that had been designed for timekeeping, not for napping.
Those gears offered no clean 10-minute option. Given the tooth counts available, the snooze cam could deliver an interval of a little over 9 minutes, or a little over 10. The engineers picked the shorter one, and legend adds a health-flavored rationale: past 10 minutes, a dozing sleeper risks slipping into deeper sleep and waking up worse. Whether that argument was science or marketing, the die was cast: the snooze would be nine-ish minutes because the brass said so.
Then came the great irony. Digital clocks of the 1970s and 80s had no mechanical constraint whatsoever: any interval was one line of code away. Yet manufacturers kept 9 minutes, partly out of respect for what users expected, partly, the story goes, because early chip designs found single-digit counters convenient. What those 9 minutes actually buy you
Now for the uncomfortable part: the feature the gears made famous is a bad deal, and sleep science is fairly united on it. The 9-minute fragment is too short to complete anything restful: no full cycle, barely any light sleep of value. What it can do is start a brand-new sleep cycle, which your alarm then tears open again. Repeat two or three times and you have manufactured the worst possible morning: serial interruptions at the exact moment your brain is heading back down.
The groggy result has a name, sleep inertia: that heavy-headed fog after waking from the wrong phase. Snoozing multiplies it. Your body also runs a wake-up program in the hour before rising, temperature climbing, cortisol ramping, and a moving alarm time keeps that program guessing. Snoozers often spend twenty-seven minutes feeling worse at the end of them than at the first ring.
The arithmetic makes it stranger: three snoozes cost you 27 minutes of broken dozing that you could have spent as 27 minutes of actual sleep by setting the alarm later. That is the whole case in one sentence, and it is why sleep clinics give the same advice almost word for word: one alarm, set for the latest realistic moment, placed out of arm’s reach.
Making peace with the button
If you cannot quit cold turkey, harm reduction exists. Most Android clocks let you stretch the snooze: one long snooze of 20 to 30 minutes at least allows a light rest with a natural shape, far gentler than three 9-minute shreds.
