The Babylonians had two sevens to work with. First, the Moon’s phases: a lunar cycle of about 29.5 days divides naturally into four quarters, new moon, first quarter, full, last quarter, of roughly seven days each; marking every seventh day tracked the Moon well enough for markets and rituals. Second, and decisive for the names we still use: their astronomers counted exactly seven wandering stars, celestial bodies that move against the fixed background: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Seven wanderers, seven gods, and eventually one day dedicated to each: the seven-day planetary week was born, each hour and day placed under a planet’s rule.
In parallel, the Hebrew tradition anchored the seven-day cycle in scripture: six days of creation and a seventh of rest, the Sabbath, giving the week what no astronomy could: a sacred rhythm of work and rest that communities would keep unbroken through exile and empire. Rome makes it law, the planets name the days
For centuries Rome ran on an eight-day market cycle, but the seven-day planetary week spread irresistibly through the empire’s ports and barracks. The planetary names survived almost intact, and reading them is time travel. The strongest proof of the week’s grip is what happened when powerful states tried to replace it. Revolutionary France, in 1793, decimalized the calendar as it decimalized everything: months of three décades, ten-day weeks with one rest day in ten. The arithmetic was cleaner; the population, suddenly resting three days a month instead of four-plus, hated it, and the décade was dead within about a decade, the same fate its cousin decimal time met even faster.
The Soviet Union tried harder. From 1929, the nepreryvka, the continuous work week, put workers on staggered five-day (then six-day) cycles so factories never stopped: no common day off, rest days scattered across the population by color-coded rota. Output was supposed to soar; instead, machines wore out, administration tangled, and families whose members rested on different days simply stopped seeing each other. By 1940 the seven-day week was back, having outlasted the experiment, as it would outlast the state itself.
The week, in short, is humanity’s most successful purely cultural unit of time: unbacked by any exact celestial cycle (the lunar quarter’s 7.4 days is only an approximation, and claimed seven-day biological rhythms remain weak science), it survives on social synchrony alone, everyone resting, trading and praying on the same beat.
